The Man I Could Have Been

Written by Jimmy Tittle · © All rights reserved

Down by the river’s edge
Walk lovers hand in hand
Just like we used to
When I was a better man
It’s like the tide rolled out
And never came back in
And took away the man I could have been

There’s bridges over water
There’s clouds over head
Water keeps on rollin’
You won’t see those clouds again
They scatter then disappear around some distant bend
Just like the man I could have been

Life goes on, the stoned get stoned
Some truths are never known
Let by gones be by gones
My days are short but all nights are long
There’s the sweetest voice I’ve ever heard on a telephone
Who still wants the man I could have been

I’ve had many chances
I took them all with you
Every time you’d take me back
I’d promise things I couldn’t do
I’d say faith will last forever
You’d say love will never end
I’d lose my way and you’d lose hope
In the man I could’ve been

Have your say
