‘Til Only You and God are Alive

It was black as a crow at night
I was alone and reachin’ for light
Unsteady but I can get ready if I try
And dress up the ugliness I call a life
I offered up a prayer that was more like beggin’
How can one so ragged be so vain?
I like a quick reply to all my questions
It was years before the answer came
And it was that
You’ve gotta want it ’til you don’t want it
Cry, cry, cry ’til you don’t cry
And let enough of yourself vanish
‘Til only you and God are alive
If you hang around the old
Barbershop long enough
There’s a real good chance
You’re gonna get yourself
A really bad haircut
And until you know what it means
To fool yourself about that
It’s gonna keep fallin’ ’til it’s all gone
So don’t forget your hat
You’ve got to want it ’til you don’t want it
Cry, cry, cry ’til you don’t cry
And let enough of yourself vanish
‘Til only you and God are alive
